Sunset when the husky and I
Walked a September road
Naples, alizarin, burgundy and green
Colors of leaves growing old
Exploding cattails on brittle stems
And a willow thick pond growing mold.
He took the lead with tail on back
His course on padded shoes
Here and there leaving scattered tracks
On dirt heavy with dew
And one last duck sailed alone
On a swollen grey lagoon
Where ghostly poplars make their home
With the eagle and the loon.
Overhead uneven grays
Washed the changing sky
And setting sun in the west
Nodded a final good bye.
